Accurate vehicle weighing is vital for managing fleet operations safely and meeting regulatory requirements. Recently, Sensortronic Weighing and Inspection Australia (SWIA) was engaged by a Queensland Government department to service and calibrate their portable weigh pad system. This system, which consists of six individual wheel weigh pads, ensures that the government’s fleet vehicles remain within their Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) limits. Although the job began as a straightforward service and calibration, it evolved into an in-depth assessment and repair project.
Project Overview
Initial Inspection
During the initial check, SWIA technicians connected all six weigh pads to the indicator and discovered a fault with weigh pad #1. By methodically tracing the issue, the team pinpointed a malfunction originating from one of the load cells.
Diagnosis and Repair
After opening the junction box in weigh pad #1, technicians de-soldered and tested each load cell. They identified a single load cell that had failed. SWIA then sourced a matching replacement from the manufacturer and completed the installation, restoring the pad’s functionality.
Further Repairs
As part of a thorough system check, the team also tested the remaining weigh pads. Weigh pad #5 was found to have a damaged connector, which was replaced to ensure secure connections. These targeted repairs helped restore the entire set of weigh pads to full operational status.
Testing and Calibration
With all components fixed and reassembled, SWIA tested the weigh pads on a 20-tonne calibration press. This rigorous process allowed the technicians to compare each pad’s readings against known test weights. Adjustments were made where necessary, ensuring accurate weight measurements. A comprehensive, traceable calibration test report was then issued to the Queensland Government client.
Key Definitions
- Load Cells: Sensors that convert a force—such as vehicle weight—into an electrical signal. A slight deformation in the load cell changes its electrical resistance, which is then measured and translated into a weight reading.
- Weigh Pads: Portable scales designed to weigh vehicles or other heavy objects without the need for a full-sized weighbridge. They are ideal for mobile or temporary weighing setups, providing accurate, on-the-spot measurements.
- Calibration: The process of comparing a measurement device’s readings to a known standard or reference weight. If discrepancies are found, the device is adjusted to deliver more accurate measurements.
This successful project underscores SWIA’s commitment to providing precise, reliable, and compliant weighing solutions. By diagnosing faults, replacing failed components, and conducting meticulous calibration, SWIA ensured that the Queensland Government’s weigh pad system is fully operational and ready to help manage fleet vehicle weights safely. If your organisation relies on portable weighing equipment and needs expert servicing or calibration, SWIA’s dedicated team stands ready to assist—keeping your operations running smoothly and in line with regulatory standards.
